MATTHEW FLICKSTEIN Erasing the Boundaries to Freedom: A New York

Insight Residential Retreat THURSDAY, AUGUST 7 – SUNDAY, AUGUST 10

If we are already free why do we still experience confusion,

emotionality, and reactivity? It may be because we are not seeing

 things as they really are.

There are two realities: conventional — how things appear to be, and  ultimate — how things are in their own nature. To erase the boundaries  to freedom, we don’t deny the appearance of things such as our body,  our mind, or our life’s circumstances, but mere appearance does not  cause suffering. To experience true freedom, we need to stop clinging to appearances as if they were the ultimate realities of life.

This retreat will focus on differentiating between conventional and  ultimate realities. We will practice meditations and contemplations  designed to expose the ways in which we cling to concepts and beliefs  that cloud our vision of ultimate truth. There will also be  opportunities for teacher conferences.

Location: St Francis Center for Renewal, 395 Bridle Path Road,

Bethlehem PA. (St. Francis Center is less than two hours by bus from  NYC.)

Fee: $325, $295 or $255 (all rooms are single). This retreat is being  offered on a sliding scale basis, which allows individuals to select a fee that best reflects their means. Any amount above the lowest rate enables NYI to offer financial assistance to those who request it and  constitutes a tax-deductible deduction.

Participants should arrive at the retreat center between 4:30 and 6:30 PM on Thursday. Thursday dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 followed by the opening retreat session. The retreat ends on Sunday at  noon after brunch. Meals will be vegetarian. A common refrigerator is available for those who need to bring special items due to dietary

requirements. The retreat center provides towels and bed linens but  you need to bring your own toiletries. You can check out the retreat  center at www.catholic-church.org/stfrancis-cfn

Please notify NYI if you are interested in attending and we will send you an information packet with additional details about the retreat.

Dalai Lama Quote of the Week

One of the reasons there is a need to adopt a strong countermeasure against someone who harms you is that, if you let it pass, there is a danger of that person becoming habituated to extremely negative actions, which in the long run will cause that person's own downfall and is very destructive for the individual himself or herself. Therefore a strong countermeasure, taken out of compassion or a sense of concern for the other, is necessary. When you are motivated by that realization, then there is a sense of concern as part of your motive for taking that strong measure.

...One of the reasons why there is some ground to feel compassionate toward a perpetrator of crime or an aggressor is that the aggressor, because he or she is perpetrating a crime, is at the causal stage, accumulating the causes and conditions that later lead to undesirable consequences. So, from that point of view, there is enough ground to feel compassionate toward the aggressor.
