About the Buddhist Sangha of Bucks County
History
The Buddhist Sangha of Bucks County began as a non-denominational Buddhist
group in 2001. We have used the same liturgy as the Buddhist Sangha of South
Jersey, which meets in Cherry Hill, NJ. The Sangha is run by a Board of Directors
elected by the membership.
Community Service
The Buddha taught that "One should conquer anger through kindness,
wickedness through goodness, selfishness through charity, and falsehood
through truthfulness" (Dhammapada, XVII, 3). As we are interdependent with all
things, without a ‘separate self’, we find freedom from suffering in selfless action.
- We currently donate to Food Banks in Lower Bucks through weekly
donations of food brought to the Sangha.
- We clean a two-mile section of highway through the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway program in Levittown.
For other service activities, look at our past Annual Reports.
OBJECTIVES
For the years 2006-2008 we are investigating various Buddhist traditions in order
to pick a path and find a spiritual teacher to deepen our practice.
Non-Profit Status
The Sangha is exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501c3 of the
Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to you are deductible under section 170 of
the Code. You are also qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises,
transfers or gifts under section 2055, 2106 and 2522 of the Code.
Sangha Community
The Pali word "sangha" literally means "group" or "congregation", but when it is
used in the suttas, the word usually refers to the community of Buddhist
monastic. At the Buddhist Sangha of Bucks County, we take it to mean our
community of lay practitioners who have found meaning in our lives from the
teachings of the Buddha, and wish to learn and practice more deeply. Our Mission
is ‘To present, teach and practice Buddhism, and to provide meditation instruction
and community service in a manner consistent with the teaching of the Buddha.’
Membership
Membership in the Sangha is not required. It is available if and one wishes to
deepen their relationship with the community. The Form is available here.
Weddings, Births, Illness and Funerals
We recognize the deep importance of life events and changes. We will celebrate,
mourn and understand with you at your invitation. If formal ceremonies are
required, we will endeavor to locate a qualified monastic representative.
